The hotel

The hotel

Located in the fifth district of Vienna (Margareten), known for its magnificent old buildings and particular internal courtyards, the Hotel Indigo belongs to the international brand IHG Hotels & Resorts.

It is a new construction, strongly linked with the historical context where it stands and with the city of Vienna. The project and the interior design part were handled by BWM Architekten. For the first hotel in Austria of the British boutique hotel chain IHG, they created a magical oasis, a secret garden in the courtyard of the hotel in the heart of the city.

The concept of the project was to immerse guests in the neighborhood where they are staying in. Here it is the lively 5th district, strongly influenced by the nearby Naschmarkt and its multicultural atmosphere, as well as the local Chinatown.

The secret garden

Through an understated entrance inserted in a striking façade, guests pass through a narrow corridor with a strong chromatic impact in a peaceful inner courtyard full of greenery, bordered by open-air access galleries adorned with hanging plants; here guests are attracted by a refined context, inspired by the traditional Viennese Pawlatschen and other elements, materials and colours that characterize the city. Among these is the so-called Viennese tile parquet, which consists of tiles laid out in a pattern with a trim edge, a technique often found in traditional Viennese entrance halls and subway stations designed by architect Otto Wagner at the beginning of the 1900s. Two other typical elements of the interior design are the Viennese wickerwork, used for the hanging lamps and the herringbone parquet in the library.

The garden concept extends to the hotel's verdant interior as well. Part of the lobby is a winter garden where the large windows are the only thing separating it from the outside. The dark-stained oak parquet floor of the library creates a cosy atmosphere, while the precious stoneware floor sets the bar area apart. The restaurant of over 400 square meters on the ground floor has seating for about 200 guests and large windows offer an uninterrupted view of the greenery in the courtyard; here the kitchen pays particular attention to local products and their seasonality.

Rooms

Most of the hotel's 158 rooms give onto the courtyard, where plants hanging from the balconies act as a curtain and provide a certain degree of privacy. The interior design project is appreciated in the wall décor, colours and materials used; an example of this is the Viennese wickerwork used for the lamps and backs of the chairs.

There are three types of room design and each refers to Vienna in a different way. First of all there is the theme of the secret garden and it is reflected, for instance, in the curtains and carpets. Secondly there are elements that allude to the urban character of the 5th district in the form of industrial design, steel and exposed concrete. Lastly there are patterns and oriental decorative elements to recall the multicultural character of the nearby Naschmarkt, a characteristic feature of Vienna and of the 5th district in particular.

Choice of product and finishing

Choice of product and finishing

As for the mixers and taps in the bathrooms of this prestigious context that combines history and novelty, the architects chose mixers from the Cleo collection by Fir Italia, with an essential cylindrical design capable of combining with different aesthetic and installation needs. The chosen finishing is Ravishing Gold, a very pleasant shade of gold, which has the advantage of making a precious and ancient metal modern and cool, keeping its aesthetic power intact.

A wall-mounted mixer was chosen for the washbasin area, while the chosen shower configuration consists of a ceiling-mounted shower head and a slide bar operated by a 2-way-built-in thermostatic shower mixer which includes the FirUnico universal built-in system. In some suites, furthermore, a floor-mounted mixer complete with hand shower has been installed in combination with a freestanding bathtub.
